What is a heat pump?

A heat pump is an all-in-one unit, meaning it heats and cools your home year round. The unit is installed outside the house (similar to an air conditioning unit). And they function like an air conditioner in reverse. The two most common types of heat pumps are:

  • Air-source (transfers heat between indoor and outdoor air)
  • Ground source, aka geothermal (transfers heat between the ground and indoor air)

Geothermal heat pumps are typically more expensive to install, but they are often more efficient than air-source and cost less to operate.

Unlike your furnace, heat pumps don’t generate heat, they absorb heat and transfer it. Because of this, heat pumps are ideal for sub-zero temperatures. But in hight heat, a heat pump will act like a traditional air conditioner.

Do heat pumps need repair?

Most people don’t know their heat pump needs repair until they receive their utility bill. Many heat pumps have an auxiliary backup source of heat, whether gas or electric. Proper maintenance will help reduce unexpected spikes in utility bills.

Like all things, they do occasionally need repair. Your HVAC Master technician can quickly identify what needs to be repaired and get the job done right at an affordable price.
